An Automated 4D Approach for Left Ventricular Assessment in Clinical Cine MR Images

چکیده
Cine Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging has become the method-of-choice for the examination of the dynamic behaviour of the heart. An assessment of the left ventricle can reveal regions of myocardial dysfunction and their severeness. The scope of this work is a complete analysis of the left ventricular dynamics for the usage in a clinical environment. For that purpose, endocardial and epicardial borders are automatically extracted in 3D cine data in a first step. This is followed by a segmentation of the endocardium and the myocardium into 17 segments following the recommendations of the American Heart Association and the computation of common global volumetric values (stroke volume, ejection fraction etc.) and parameters that describe the left ventricular dynamics (wall motion, wall thickening). A retrospective analysis of cardiac cine MR image data from 20 patients (healthy ones, patients with abnormal wall motion, and patients who suffered an infarction) has been done. That image data has been acquired in the clinical routine at two different hospitals. The here presented automated approach led to a successful segmentation and assessment of the left ventricle for all data sets. The pathological cases could be identified easily due to their characteristic change of the motion pattern. The main advantage of our approach is the reproducibility of the assessment results and the gain in time for the cardiologist who has to analyse the huge amount of cine data.

The volumes of the left and right cardiac ventricles are important indexes for several cardiovascular diseases. In this paper, a semiautomatic algorithm based on 4D fuzzy connectedness is proposed for segmenting the cardiac ventricles in arbitrarily oriented cardiac cine MR images. The segmentation of the left ventricle was evaluated using 45 short axis images and a visual assessment of right v...

متن کاملAutomated, Accurate and Fast Segmentation of 4D Cardiac MR Images
Based on discrete mathematical morphology, we propose a new automated and fast procedure to segment the left ventricular myocardium in 4D (3D+t) cine-MRI sequences. Thanks to the comparison with manual segmentation performed by two cardiologists, we demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method. The relevance of the ejection fraction and myocardium mass measured from segmentations is also ass...
متن کاملValidation of Small-Animal Look-Locker Inversion Recovery (SALLI) Cine versus Cine MR in assessment of left ventricular function
Background Small-Animal Look-Locker Inversion Recovery (SALLI) is a novel imaging method that generates simultaneously cardiac T1 maps, cine MR and inversion recovery-prepared images for high heart rates. T1 mapping by SALLI has been tested and compared with histology, however the assessment of left ventricular (LV) function has not yet been validated. Our aim was to compare the measurement of ...
متن کاملGlobal left ventricular function quantification with CMR 4D Flow
Background 4D MR flow is a rapidly evolving technique, offering both anatomical and functional information in just a single acquisition and if successful, in the future, the 4D flow sequence should replace the 2D MR sequences. The purpose of this study is to use the anatomical information from the 4D flow sequence to assess the global left ventricular function and compare these results with the...
